Wimbledon qualifying is here, and we've got three picks from today's first round to get into. These early qualifying matches can be tricky to call, but there are a few matchups where the picture is pretty clear.
Wimbledon Predictions
Otto Virtanen vs Pedro Martinez Portero
Head-to-head: Virtanen 1-0 Portero
Virtanen took their only previous meeting, and on grass that lead feels even more relevant. He's a natural on the surface, comfortable at the net and with a serve that plays up on fast courts, and qualifying at Wimbledon is basically his ideal hunting ground. Martinez Portero is a clay specialist who's never really found his footing on grass and this feels like a mismatch in terms of surface preference.
Prediction: Virtanen in 3
Vilius Gaubas vs Michael Mmoh
Head-to-head: First meeting
Gaubas has the higher ranking, but Mmoh's game is built for grass. His serve is massive and his ball-striking off both wings can be brutal when it clicks, and on a fast surface there aren't many players at this level who want to trade with him. That said, Gaubas is solid and consistent but doesn't have an obvious weapon to lean on here. I think Mmoh gets through this one without too much drama.
Prediction: Mmoh in 3
Joel Schwaerzler vs Christopher O'Connell
Head-to-head: First meeting
O'Connell has been around the tour long enough to know how to handle these kinds of matches, and grass suits his aggressive, flat-hitting style. Schwaerzler is young and ranked in a similar range, but O'Connell, who tends to raise his level noticeably on faster surfaces, should be the more composed player on the day and on grass that composure tends to matter early in sets when nerves are a factor. Hard to see this being particularly close at all.
Prediction: O'Connell in 3
