Cobolli vs Zverev Prediction & More at Madrid Open, H2H, Picks

Three quarter-final picks from Madrid today, and honestly it's a pretty interesting set of matchups. We've got a couple of genuine contests mixed in with what should be a more comfortable afternoon for one of the favorites. Let's get into it.

Madrid Open Predictions

Flavio Cobolli vs Alexander Zverev

Head-to-head: Cobolli 1-2 Zverev

Cobolli has been one of the better stories on tour this year and he's clearly improved a lot since his last meeting with Zverev, but this is a tough ask on Madrid clay against a player who's been one of the most consistent performers at this tournament for years. Zverev's ability to grind through long rallies on this surface without getting rattled is really hard to deal with and the slow conditions here suit him perfectly.

Cobolli's one win in the head-to-head came on a faster surface, and that matters. Hard to see this being competitive at all.

Prediction: Zverev in 2

Arthur Fils vs Jiri Lehecka

Head-to-head: Fils 2-2 Lehecka

A dead-even head-to-head and two players who are both playing some of the better tennis of their careers right now. Fils is aggressive and can take over a match quickly when he's on, but Lehecka has become so good at not panicking in big moments, and his game travels well to clay even if it's not his best surface.

I think the third set decides this one and Lehecka's composure gives him the edge late. Should be a really entertaining match, though.

Prediction: Lehecka in 3

Casper Ruud vs Alexander Blockx

Head-to-head: First meeting

Blockx reaching the Madrid quarter-finals at ranking 71 is a solid run, but Ruud on clay in a big tournament is a different kind of problem. This is exactly the environment where Ruud has made three Roland Garros finals, and Blockx hasn't shown he can handle that level of consistency from the baseline yet.

Ruud should still find a way to get through here, though I feel like Blockx makes it interesting enough to push a third set. That said, these things rarely go as cleanly as the rankings suggest.

Prediction: Ruud in 3
