A couple of quarter-final picks from Munich today, with clear skies and a high of 66°F making for perfect conditions out on the clay. We've got a heavy favorite in one match and a genuinely tricky call in the other, so let's get into it.
BMW Open Predictions
Alexander Zverev vs Francisco Cerundolo
Head-to-head: Zverev 4-3 Cerundolo
The head-to-head is closer than you'd think given the ranking gap, but Zverev has won the last two meetings and is playing some of the best clay tennis of his career right now. The slow Munich conditions suit him perfectly, giving him time to set up those big forehands from the baseline and grind opponents down over long rallies.
Cerundolo is a solid clay-court player and won't make it easy, but Zverev at home in Munich on clay is about as strong a favorite as you'll find at this level. Cerundolo's last win in the H2H came back in 2022, which on this surface and in these conditions feels like a very different era, and that feels like a long time ago.
Prediction: Zverev in 2
Denis Shapovalov vs Alex Molcan
Head-to-head: Shapovalov 1-0 Molcan
On paper this looks straightforward for Shapovalov, but the ranking gap here is a bit misleading. Molcan is ranked 166 but has been through some injury-related ranking drops before and is a genuine clay-court threat, comfortable with long baseline exchanges and tough to break down. Shapovalov, meanwhile, has never been the most consistent performer on clay and his aggressive game can fall apart quickly if the timing is even slightly off.
I feel like Molcan's steadiness from the back of the court is going to cause real problems here and the three-set format on clay tends to favor the more defensive player when the other guy is streaky. That said, the lone H2H meeting doesn't tell us much. Molcan takes this one, all things considered.
Prediction: Molcan in 3
