We've got the Munich final to close out the BMW Open, and it's a great one, with Flavio Cobolli and Ben Shelton playing for the title under grey skies and cool temperatures that are likely to slow things down even more on an already heavy clay court. Rain is basically guaranteed today, so expect delays and a stop-start rhythm to the whole thing.
BMW Open Predictions
Flavio Cobolli vs Ben Shelton
Head-to-head: Cobolli 2-3 Shelton
Shelton leads the H2H but Cobolli has shown he can beat him, and reaching a clay final at a tour event is a serious statement from the Italian. Clay has always been Shelton's weakest surface, and the wet, heavy conditions today are about the worst possible setup for his game. His serve loses a lot of its zip when the balls get heavy and longer rallies have historically been where Cobolli can hurt him.
That said, Shelton has clearly been the better player this week and there's something to be said for a guy finding form even on a surface he doesn't love. Cobolli's had an impressive run but Shelton has that extra gear when the moment is big, and finals tend to suit players with that kind of confidence. I think the match goes three, but Shelton should still find a way to get through here.
Prediction: Shelton in 3
