Rybakina vs Shnaider Prediction & More at WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix - Stuttgart, H2H, Picks

Three solid matches on the schedule today in Stuttgart, with some cold and overcast conditions making things a bit slower out there at around 40°F. Rybakina against Shnaider is the obvious headline, but there's plenty of interest across the card. Who do you think makes it through?

WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Predictions

Elena Rybakina vs Diana Shnaider

Head-to-head: First meeting

This is a fascinating first meeting between two players who both have the kind of firepower that can cut through anyone on any surface. Shnaider had a strong 2024 and has shown she can handle the big stage, and her heavy lefty game will test Rybakina in ways that a lot of players simply can't. But Rybakina on clay is a different animal from what most people expect and her flat, penetrating ball makes it really hard to build anything against her in rallies.

The cold conditions today will keep the ball low and fast, and that suits Rybakina's game more than Shnaider's. I think this goes three, but Rybakina's serve and return combination is just too reliable to let it slip.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Liudmila Samsonova vs Cori Gauff

Head-to-head: Samsonova 0-3 Gauff

Samsonova has never beaten Gauff, and that 0-3 record, which includes a pretty one-sided loss on clay last season, isn't flattering on the details either. Gauff has consistently handled her pace and aggression well, and on clay the extended rallies only work in Coco's favor. Samsonova can be devastating when everything clicks, but she's also prone to unraveling when things get tight, and Gauff has become so good at not panicking in those moments.

Hard to see this being competitive at all.

Prediction: Gauff in 2

Karolina Muchova vs Elise Mertens

Head-to-head: Muchova 1-1 Mertens

The H2H is level but Muchova is the better player right now, and her variety on clay makes her genuinely difficult to read. She can slice, drop, drive, and come forward, and Mertens doesn't have the pace to really punish her for it. The cold, slow conditions today could actually give Mertens a bit more time on the ball, and she's a solid enough mover to hang around in long matches, so I feel like this one takes a while to sort itself out.

That said, Muchova's creativity on this surface is a level above and she should find a way through, all things considered.

Prediction: Muchova in 3
