Three fourth-round picks from the Italian Open today, with some interesting matchups to get through. Sinner plays at home, Zverev faces a tricky Italian opponent, and Musetti and Ruud meet in what could be the best match of the day. Let's get into it.
Italian Open Predictions
Lorenzo Musetti vs Casper Ruud
Head-to-head: Musetti 1-2 Ruud
Musetti's one win in this rivalry came on clay, but Ruud has the better of him overall and has been one of the most consistent clay-court performers on tour for years. Ruud reached the Roland Garros final as recently as 2022 and 2023, and slow Roman conditions suit his heavy topspin and ability to grind out long rallies without blinking.
Musetti will have the crowd behind him and he's capable of brilliant tennis on this surface, but he's also capable of going missing when the match gets tight and Ruud doesn't give you many free points to cover those moments. This one probably goes three sets, but I think Ruud closes it out.
Prediction: Ruud in 3
Luciano Darderi vs Alexander Zverev
Head-to-head: Darderi 0-1 Zverev
Darderi is a solid clay-courter and the crowd will love him, but Zverev at a Masters on clay is a completely different proposition. He's a two-time Rome finalist, he won Hamburg last year, and his combination of serve and heavy forehand becomes almost impossible to handle when the slow conditions let him dictate the pace of rallies. Hard to see Darderi troubling him here at all.
Prediction: Zverev in 2
Jannik Sinner vs Alexei Popyrin
Head-to-head: Sinner 2-1 Popyrin
Popyrin's one win over Sinner came on hard courts in Brisbane, which feels like a lifetime ago given where Sinner is now. Playing in Rome as world number one, on his home surface in front of his home crowd, Sinner wins this and it probably isn't close. That said, Popyrin can hit big, but he's never been comfortable on clay, a surface where his flat ball-striking tends to sit up, and Sinner is so good at not panicking in long rallies, just absorbing pace and redirecting until his opponent makes an error.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
