Barcelona is always one of the best weeks on the clay swing, and we've got three good second-round matches to dig into today, all under clear skies and cool temperatures around 12°C. Alcaraz defending on his home crowd's favorite court is the obvious headline, but there are some interesting subplots elsewhere in the draw too. Who do you think causes a surprise today?
Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell Predictions
Corentin Moutet vs Lorenzo Musetti
Head-to-head: Moutet 0-2 Musetti
Moutet is a creative player who can make things uncomfortable for anyone on a given day, but Musetti has handled him without too much drama both times they've met. Musetti is genuinely one of the more complete clay-court players in the top ten right now, with the variety and touch to deal with Moutet's awkward lefty angles.
Moutet will make it scrappy and probably steal a set at some point, but Musetti should come through, all things considered. Three sets feels right given Moutet's style, but the Italian's in form and won't be rattled.
Prediction: Musetti in 3
Carlos Alcaraz vs Tomas Machac
Head-to-head: First meeting
Alcaraz defending in Barcelona is almost unfair. He won this title in 2023 and the crowd treats him like a rock star from the first point and that energy genuinely seems to lift him. Machac is no pushover and has had some impressive wins this year, but first meetings with Alcaraz tend to be a rude awakening, especially on clay and especially here.
The slow conditions in Barcelona amplify everything Alcaraz does well, the heavy topspin, the drop shots, the ability to flip a point from defense to offense in one swing. Hard to see Machac being competitive at all here, honestly.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 3
Arthur Fils vs Brandon Nakashima
Head-to-head: First meeting
This is a genuinely tricky one to call. Nakashima has been quietly solid this season and his flat, penetrating ball can disrupt rhythm on clay better than most Americans manage. That said, Fils on clay has shown real growth, he's become so good at not panicking in long rallies and his athleticism lets him stay in points he has no business staying in.
I think Fils takes it in three, though Nakashima will make him work for it. The conditions, cool and a bit slow, probably suit Fils more in the end.
Prediction: Fils in 3
