A few interesting third-round picks from the WTA French Open to get into today, and honestly this is a slate with some real potential for chaos. Can Swiatek be stopped? We've got our predictions below.
WTA French Open Predictions
Marta Kostyuk vs Iga Swiatek
Head-to-head: Kostyuk 0-3 Swiatek
The H2H doesn't flatter Kostyuk here, and Swiatek on clay is normally just a different conversation entirely. But Swiatek has looked beatable this season in a way she didn't in 2022 or 2023, and Kostyuk is one of those players who genuinely doesn't seem intimidated by the occasion or the opponent across the net. She hits the ball hard and flat and doesn't give Swiatek the heavy topspin she loves to redirect.
This goes three sets. Swiatek should take one of them comfortably, but I think Kostyuk's aggression and refusal to play scared gives her enough in the other two.
Prediction: Kostyuk in 3
Victoria Mboko vs Madison Keys
Head-to-head: Mboko 1-0 Keys
Mboko leads the H2H and at just 19 she's been one of the more exciting names on the WTA clay circuit this season. Keys has had some strong results in 2024 and her ball-striking is never something to dismiss, but clay slows down her flat game enough that the edges she gets on faster surfaces mostly disappear. Mboko in three feels right, though Keys will push her.
Prediction: Mboko in 3
Cori Gauff vs Anastasia Potapova
Head-to-head: Gauff 2-2 Potapova
A genuinely even H2H, and that 2-2 record, which includes a Potapova win earlier this year indoors, tells you everything about how these two match up. Potapova is one of those players who can look ordinary for a set and then just take over a match before you've noticed. Gauff has been inconsistent in 2024 and hasn't looked entirely settled on clay this swing and that's the version of Gauff that Potapova can beat. That said, the slow conditions suit Potapova's ability to stay in rallies and wait for her moment.
Potapova wins this one, all things considered.
Prediction: Potapova in 3
