We've got three quarter-final picks from the WTA French Open today, and there's plenty to chew on, from a revenge match between two young Russians to what could be a genuine shock result. Let's get into it.
WTA French Open Predictions
Marta Kostyuk vs Mirra Andreeva
Head-to-head: Kostyuk 2-0 Andreeva
Kostyuk has owned this matchup so far, and that's a pretty remarkable stat given how well Andreeva has been playing over the past year. But H2H records have a way of getting corrected eventually, and Andreeva is a much more complete player now than she was in those earlier losses. She's become so good at not panicking in long rallies and on clay she can grind opponents into the ground if the match goes deep.
Kostyuk is a tough competitor and won't make it easy, so I think this goes three sets. Andreeva should have enough to turn the H2H around here.
Prediction: Andreeva in 3
Aryna Sabalenka vs Diana Shnaider
Head-to-head: First meeting
First meeting between these two, which is surprising given they're both Russian-speaking players who've been around the top of the game for a while now. Shnaider has had a strong season and her ball-striking off the ground is genuinely elite on her best days, so this isn't a walkover. That said, Sabalenka is the world number one for a reason, and on a slow clay surface she absorbs pace well and makes you play a lot of balls, and Shnaider hasn't really been tested at this level on this surface consistently.
I feel like Shnaider takes a set here and makes it interesting, but Sabalenka finds another gear when she needs it.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 3
Anna Kalinskaya vs Maja Chwalinska
Head-to-head: First meeting
On paper this looks straightforward for Kalinskaya, ranked 90 spots higher and a more established tour presence. But Kalinskaya has had a rough stretch of form lately and hasn't shown much consistency on clay this season. Chwalinska, meanwhile, is a clay-court specialist, and one of the more underrated grinders on tour, who lives for these kinds of slow-surface grind matches, and at 114 in the world she still has a very solid game when she's on.
Hard to see Kalinskaya getting through this one. Chwalinska wins it.
Prediction: Chwalinska in 3
