Wimbledon first round is always a bit of a minefield, and we've got three picks from today's slate that are worth talking through. A couple of clear favorites and one that's genuinely harder to call.
WTA Wimbledon Predictions
Magdalena Frech vs Anna Kalinskaya
Head-to-head: Frech 2-1 Kalinskaya
Frech actually leads this one, and two of those meetings came on hard courts where she was able to disrupt Kalinskaya's rhythm from the baseline. That said, grass is a different conversation entirely, and Kalinskaya's flat, aggressive ball-striking is much better suited to this surface than Frech's game, which relies on consistency more than pace. Kalinskaya at her best is genuinely dangerous in the first week of Wimbledon.
The trouble is Kalinskaya's injury history keeps making her form unpredictable and Frech has shown she knows how to beat her. I think this goes three sets, but Kalinskaya finds enough on serve and through the court to get through.
Prediction: Kalinskaya in 3
Sorana Cirstea vs Sara Bejlek
Head-to-head: First meeting
Cirstea is one of the most underrated grass-court players on tour. She moves well on the surface, hits clean and flat off both wings, and has the experience to handle first-round nerves that can sink players ranked around Bejlek's level. Bejlek hasn't made much noise at Slams yet, and hard to see this being competitive at all for the Romanian.
Prediction: Cirstea in 2
Magda Linette vs Mirra Andreeva
Head-to-head: Linette 1-3 Andreeva
Andreeva leads this head-to-head and has been one of the most consistent players on tour through 2024 and into this season, reaching the Roland Garros final, her first Grand Slam final, earlier this year. Linette is a solid professional and she's capable of making things uncomfortable, but Andreeva has become so good at not panicking in long rallies, and her ability to redirect pace and stay disciplined under pressure should be the difference on grass.
Linette will probably take this to three, the head-to-head suggests she always makes Andreeva work. That said, the gap in class right now is real.
Prediction: Andreeva in 3
