Three picks from the second round at the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle today, and on paper at least, it's a pretty good day for the favorites. We've got Medvedev, Zverev, and Fritz all on court against lower-ranked opponents, so the question is whether any of the underdogs can make things awkward on a surface that rewards big serving and clean ball-striking. Let's get into it.
Terra Wortmann Open Predictions
Terence Atmane vs Daniil Medvedev
Head-to-head: Medvedev leads 1-0
Atmane is an interesting player and his serve can cause problems, but Medvedev on grass is a different animal from what people expected a few years ago. He reached the Wimbledon final in 2023 and his movement and return game have genuinely improved on the surface. The one previous meeting went to Medvedev and there's not much in Atmane's game to suggest he can flip that on a fast Halle court.
Prediction: Medvedev in 2
Alexander Zverev vs Yannick Hanfmann
Head-to-head: Zverev leads 1-0
This is a tricky one to read. Zverev is the hometown hero here and always gets huge support in Halle, but grass has never been where he's looked most comfortable, and Hanfmann is a solid grass-court player who made the Wimbledon third round just a couple of years back. The fast conditions will help Hanfmann's serve and he'll make Zverev work for every point. I think Zverev gets through, but don't be surprised if this one stretches.
Prediction: Zverev in 3
Fabian Marozsan vs Taylor Fritz
Head-to-head: Fritz leads 2-0
Marozsan is a clay guy through and through, and coming to Halle on grass is about as bad a draw as he could ask for. Hard to see this being competitive at all. Fritz is one of the cleaner ball-strikers on tour and his game translates really well to fast surfaces, with his flat forehand and big serve, which has been clocked among the fastest on tour, doing most of the damage. That said, Fritz has won both previous meetings and I feel like this one follows the same pattern, even if Marozsan manages to steal a set somewhere along the way.
Prediction: Fritz in 3
