A few interesting picks from the Shanghai Masters today, and at least one matchup that looks more complicated on paper than the rankings suggest. Let's get into it.
Shanghai Masters Predictions
Alexander Zverev vs Alexander Bublik
Head-to-head: Zverev 1-3 Bublik
That H2H is genuinely surprising for a guy ranked 20 places higher, and Bublik's wins haven't been flukes. He's beaten Zverev at majors, on hard courts, and his flat ball-striking and unpredictable serving can genuinely scramble Zverev's rhythm before he gets a chance to settle. Bublik at his best is one of those players who can beat anyone on a given day, and he clearly has Zverev's number to some extent.
That said, Bublik is wildly inconsistent and Zverev has been one of the most reliable performers on tour this year. If Bublik's serve misfires or he starts going for too much too early, Zverev's baseline consistency should grind him down. I think Zverev gets through this, but three sets seems about right.
Prediction: Zverev in 3
Jiri Lehecka vs Rafael Jodar
Head-to-head: Lehecka 0-1 Jodar
Jodar is ranked higher and has already beaten Lehecka, in their only meeting so far, but this feels like a genuinely open match between two players who can both hurt you on hard courts. Lehecka has the bigger serve and more firepower, but Jodar's consistency and ability to construct points methodically makes him a tough opponent at this level.
Hard to see this being competitive at all in Lehecka's favour. Jodar takes it in three.
Prediction: Jodar in 3
Alex De Minaur vs Karen Khachanov
Head-to-head: Minaur 2-2 Khachanov
As level as it gets, and these two have genuinely different games that create an interesting puzzle. Khachanov has the size and power to hurt De Minaur if he can keep him from getting into the rally and redirecting pace, and he's shown before he can overpower the Australian on hard courts. That said, De Minaur has become so good at not panicking when he's under pressure and his legs make him nearly impossible to beat in long matches.
I feel like De Minaur's fitness and defensive speed tip this one over three sets, all things considered.
Prediction: Minaur in 3
