Three picks from the French Open qualifying today, and it's an interesting mix with a couple of results that could go either way. Let's get into it.
French Open Qualifying Predictions
Chak Lam Coleman Wong vs Billy Harris
Head-to-head: Wong 2-1 Harris
Wong holds the edge in this rivalry and comes in ranked a decent 36 spots above Harris, which on clay qualifying feels like it should matter. Harris has had his moments on faster surfaces but clay has never really been his thing and Wong is the more consistent performer from the back of the court.
Wong wins this one comfortably.
Prediction: Wong in 2
Emilio Nava vs Bu Yunchaokete
Head-to-head: Nava 1-0 Yunchaokete
Nava is the higher-ranked player and leads the head-to-head, so picking Bu here feels like a mild upset call, but the Chinese player has shown real improvement on clay this year and Nava has been inconsistent enough that this is far from a sure thing. Bu's game suits the slower conditions well, and I think the longer the match goes the more that favors him.
A close one, but Bu finds a way in three sets, all things considered.
Prediction: Yunchaokete in 3
Jesper De Jong vs Liam Draxl
Head-to-head: De Jong 0-1 Draxl
Draxl actually leads this head-to-head, which is a bit surprising given he's ranked 55 spots below De Jong, and it means De Jong will be keen to set the record straight. De Jong is a solid clay-court operator and the ranking gap is real enough that he should be the better player on the day. That said, Draxl has already shown he can beat him so there's no reason to expect a walkover here.
De Jong gets it done in three.
Prediction: Jong in 3
