A couple of quarter-final picks from the WTA Catalonia Open today, under partially cloudy skies and pleasant conditions in La Bisbal d'Empordà. Both matches have some interesting wrinkles, so let's get into it.
WTA Catalonia Open Predictions
Caroline Werner vs Tamara Korpatsch
Head-to-head: Werner 1-1 Korpatsch
On paper this looks like a comfortable win for Korpatsch, who's ranked 174 spots higher and has been a regular on the WTA tour for years. But Werner has clearly been playing some good tennis to reach the quarters at this level and the 1-1 head-to-head means she's already shown she can beat Korpatsch. This feels like one of those clay-court weeks where a lower-ranked player just keeps rolling, and I think Werner carries that momentum through one more match here.
Prediction: Werner in 3
Daria Kasatkina vs Sara Sorribes Tormo
Head-to-head: Kasatkina 1-2 Tormo
Kasatkina at 72 in the world versus Tormo at 359 might look straightforward on paper, but hard to see this being competitive at all given that Tormo is essentially a different player on home Spanish clay, and the head-to-head already tells you she's figured Kasatkina out twice before. Her grinding, high-percentage style drags players into exactly the kind of war Kasatkina doesn't want, and on a slow clay surface in Catalonia that style becomes almost impossible to break down. That said, Kasatkina hasn't looked like a player in great form lately either, and Tormo playing in front of a home crowd on her best surface is genuinely dangerous regardless of the ranking gap.
Prediction: Tormo in 3
