A few quarter-final picks from Strasbourg today, with some genuinely interesting matchups on the clay under partially cloudy skies and mild temperatures around 18°C. Let's get into it.
WTA Internationaux de Strasbourg Predictions
Marie Bouzkova vs Ann Li
Head-to-head: Bouzkova 3-0 Li
Bouzkova owns this head-to-head completely, and all three wins have come on hard courts, so this clay quarter-final is actually a more open question than that 3-0 record suggests. Li has been the more consistent clay performer recently and she's not someone who folds easily in long matches. Bouzkova is a tricky opponent for anyone but she hasn't exactly been in flying form on this surface.
I think Li finally turns this one around, and three sets feels right given how competitive their matches have always been.
Prediction: Li in 3
Jaqueline Cristian vs Daria Kasatkina
Head-to-head: Cristian 1-3 Kasatkina
Kasatkina has had the better of this rivalry historically, but her ranking has slipped to 66 and she hasn't looked like the player who was threatening the top 10 a couple of years ago. Cristian, on the other hand, has been solid on clay and is ranked above her for a reason right now. The slow conditions in Strasbourg should drag rallies out and that suits Cristian's style of grinding opponents down.
Hard to see this being competitive at all, and Cristian wins it in three.
Prediction: Cristian in 3
Shuai Zhang vs Emma Navarro
Head-to-head: Zhang 3-0 Navarro
Three wins from three for Zhang against Navarro is a wild statistic when you consider the ranking gap, and it's not like these were all early-career flukes either. That said, Navarro has developed a lot as a player and is a completely different proposition now than she was in those earlier losses. Zhang, currently ranked 73 in the world, is not the force she once was and Navarro's ability to stay composed and build points methodically on clay gives her a real path through here.
The head-to-head is impossible to ignore, but I feel like this is finally the match where Navarro flips it, all things considered.
Prediction: Navarro in 3
