We've got three picks from the WTA Iasi clay courts today, with temperatures climbing toward 86°F under partly cloudy skies. None of these matchups are particularly clean calls, so let's get into it.
WTA UniCredit Iasi Open Predictions
Tamara Zidansek vs Petra Marcinko
Head-to-head: Zidansek 0-1 Marcinko
Zidansek was once a genuine clay threat, reaching the French Open semis back in 2021, but she's been ranked outside the top 100 for a while now and that version of her feels like a long time ago. Marcinko, at 45 in the world, is the more consistent player right now and has already beaten Zidansek once before.
That said, these kinds of matches on smaller clay events have a way of going the distance, and Zidansek on clay is never completely hopeless. I think Marcinko has enough to get through, but expect it to be scrappy.
Prediction: Marcinko in 3
Mayar Sherif vs Kaitlin Quevedo
Head-to-head: First meeting
Sherif is one of the better clay players on the WTA tour outside the top 50 and the surface here suits her baseline game nicely. Quevedo is ranked just three spots below her, so on paper this looks close, but Sherif's experience on clay specifically gives her the edge in a first meeting like this.
Sherif in 3 feels right, and I wouldn't be surprised if the third set is tight.
Prediction: Sherif in 3
Panna Udvardy vs Katarzyna Kawa
Head-to-head: Udvardy 1-3 Kawa
This is the most interesting match of the three. Kawa actually leads the head-to-head, a record built entirely on clay, despite being ranked 71 spots lower, and that's not a stat you see often. She's a clay specialist who has ground out results on this surface for years, and Udvardy has clearly found her difficult to handle in the past.
Udvardy's ranking advantage is real, but the h2h makes this genuinely tricky. Udvardy in 3 should still find a way to get through here, but Kawa could absolutely flip this one.
Prediction: Udvardy in 3
