Three first-round picks from the Wuhan Open today, with temperatures hitting 84°F under clear skies. All three matches have something interesting going on, so let's get into it.

WTA Wuhan Open Predictions

Daria Snigur vs Elise Mertens

Head-to-head: First meeting

Snigur has had a decent year and her ranking reflects real progress, but Mertens is a different level of opponent and hard courts are where the Belgian is most dangerous. She's been consistent on this surface for years, rarely loses to players ranked outside the top 30, and her ability to stay compact and not give away cheap errors makes her genuinely tough to break down in best-of-three.

That said, Snigur can be a handful when she's hitting freely, and this being a first meeting adds a little unpredictability. I think the experience gap tips it in the third, though.

Prediction: Mertens in 3

Katie Boulter vs Diana Shnaider

Head-to-head: Boulter 0-2 Shnaider

Boulter has her moments on hard courts and her serve can trouble anyone on a good day, but Shnaider has already beaten her twice and looks like a completely different player to the one Boulter faced earlier in those meetings. The Russian is hitting the ball with so much weight now and has the ranking to back it up. Hard to see Boulter finding a way to deal with that power off both wings.

Shnaider wins this comfortably.

Prediction: Shnaider in 2

Clara Tauson vs Marie Bouzkova

Head-to-head: Tauson 1-0 Bouzkova

Tauson leads the head-to-head but Bouzkova is the higher-ranked player right now and has been the more consistent performer over the past several months. Tauson's game can be streaky, and on a hard court in these conditions where the ball stays low and fast, Bouzkova's flat, clean ball-striking should be a real asset. The Czech has also shown she can handle pressure moments in close matches without panicking, which matters in first-round scenarios like this where nerves sometimes play a role.

Tauson's one win in their series keeps this from being a clear call, and I feel like this one goes three sets, but Bouzkova should have enough to come through, all things considered.

Prediction: Bouzkova in 3
