We've got three first-round picks from the WTA Memorial Eugenio Fontana in Modena today, with the weather threatening to play a role under partially cloudy skies and temperatures around 83°F and a high chance of rain. All three matches are pretty close on paper, so let's see who comes through.
WTA Memorial Eugenio Fontana Predictions
Andrea Lazaro Garcia vs Julia Grabher
Head-to-head: Garcia 2-0 Grabher
Garcia holds a clean H2H record over Grabher, and that kind of head-to-head dominance tends to mean something at this level. Grabher is ranked a little higher, but ranking points can be misleading in the 110-150 range and neither player has had a standout season. Garcia's clay game is solid enough that she won't be troubled by the surface and having that psychological edge over Grabher is worth something here.
It probably won't be straightforward, hence the three-setter call, but I think Garcia gets there.
Prediction: Garcia in 3
Katarzyna Kawa vs Lisa Pigato
Head-to-head: First meeting
These two are almost identical in ranking, just one spot apart, and they've never played before, so this one's genuinely hard to call. Pigato is Italian and playing in front of a home crowd in Modena, and on clay that kind of comfort with the conditions can make a real difference, especially in a tight first-round match. That said, Kawa is an experienced clay courter but at 31 she hasn't been picking up the results lately to suggest she's in a great run of form.
Pigato takes it, but it'll be close throughout.
Prediction: Pigato in 3
Marina Bassols Ribera vs Darja Semenistaja
Head-to-head: First meeting
Semenistaja comes in ranked 65 spots above Bassols Ribera and that gap is hard to ignore even at this level of the draw. The Latvian has been building a solid clay-court game, particularly over the past couple of seasons on the ITF and challenger circuit, and has the quality to handle a player she's expected to beat. Bassols Ribera has struggled to make much of an impression at this tier consistently, and without any H2H data to complicate things, Semenistaja should be the one moving on, all things considered.
Prediction: Semenistaja in 3
