A miserable day in Geneva, with temperatures barely above 6°C and a 97% chance of rain making conditions about as tough as qualifying clay gets. We've got three picks from the first round of qualifying at the Gonet Geneva Open, so let's see who comes through.
Gonet Geneva Open Predictions
Edas Butvilas vs Alexandre Muller
Head-to-head: First meeting
Muller's had a solid 2024 and his ranking of 95 reflects a player who belongs on the main tour, not in qualifying, so you'd expect him to handle Butvilas comfortably. That said, Butvilas is a young Lithuanian who competes hard on clay and these cold, slow conditions can make life awkward for anyone who wants to dictate early in the point. Muller doesn't always close these matches quickly either, and a third set feels likely.
Prediction: Muller in 3
Sebastian Ofner vs Kilian Feldbausch
Head-to-head: First meeting
Ofner is the class act here. Ranked 83 in the world and a genuine clay-court threat, he's beaten top-50 players this season and shouldn't have much trouble with a 355-ranked wildcard on home soil. Feldbausch will have the Geneva crowd behind him and that counts for something, but hard to see this being competitive at all given the gap between these two on this surface. Ofner wins, probably in three because the conditions will drag it out a bit.
Prediction: Ofner in 3
Raul Brancaccio vs Tyler Zink
Head-to-head: First meeting
I think Brancaccio gets through this one, though it won't be clean. He's the higher-ranked player and has more clay experience at this level, but Zink is a scrappy American who won't hand it over. In these cold, heavy conditions where the ball barely moves through the court, Brancaccio's baseline game should suit him fine, all things considered. That said, the third set is almost a given here.
Prediction: Brancaccio in 3
